About Ms. D
Teaching is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, careers to pursue. My process of going through the education system has been lengthy, but I believe I have learned much about myself and have gathered some nuggets of wisdom to pass down to the next generation. I graduated from Elton Collegiate 2005 and immediately was enrolled at Brandon University. My initial inspiration took me to in the Faculty of Arts, majoring in English, with the prospects of becoming a teacher in mind. The year of my anticipated graduation from the Faculty of Arts, I took an Advanced Anatomy course to complete my Biology minor; I fell in love with Biology instead. Even though it would be a few years of extra undergraduate studies, I changed my major from English to Biology and adopted Chemistry as a minor. I plan to create a science classroom where students of all interests can find something that grabs them and engages them in the sciences. The value of science and technology in the world cannot be placed and it is essential for today's students to internalize and consolidate scientific concepts.
In addition to science and teaching adolescents, I have a profound interest in international development. I have been involved with child sponsorship through World Vision since 2005. I have also volunteered and worked at Ten Thousand Villages in Brandon and, most recently, took part in a build for a Honduran family with Habitat for Humanity (2012). Through a cooperative program with Brandon University, I took part in a Spanish Language program at the Universidad de Colima over three months in 2009. I plan to incorporate many "Action Plan" projects into my classroom activities. I believe that the tangible quality of a project with a real world impact will provide the students with a sense of purpose in their studies.
I am also a Junior Varsity girls' basketball coach. I graduated as a provincial and a graduating all-star, however, I never continued my development as a basketball player. An opportunity came about to coach and I have been doing it ever since. Please visit my basketball coaching website: http://katelynderemiens.yolasite.com.
